Learning From The Past
Lonely Desert Girl Episode 3 and real-life mental health experiences.
It is nearing the end of Pride month, but we decided not to finish our story in one month. Lonely Desert Girl will be a continuing series for this year! Part of our decision to continue the story is the turn of events in the world. The visibility of LGBTQIA content is important and it is a small contribution we can make this year.
The topics of oppression, discrimination, mental health, and lack of healthcare are real-life problems. Even though our story is fiction — some of the experiences are real.
Episode 3 begins the mental health conversation by sharing some of Carter’s past. Not only did Carter have a suicide attempt, but she spent time in the hospital.
The experience of being locked away will be upcoming in an episode solely dedicated to giving a descriptive and raw experience of a mental ward. We openly discuss the fact that in the past, we had spent time in the hospital for mental health. We took that real experience and will be sharing it from Carter’s perspective.
Sometimes fiction imitates life and that is something to keep in mind when reading Lonely Desert Girl.
We share personal stories through the life of the characters created in this story. Episode 4 will be a raw exploration of life with mental health struggles and a lack of access to healthcare in the process.
